Machine operators and users should take all available technical and organizational measures to ensure the safe operation of machines. Safety considerations must be taken into account when designing machines; safe design in accordance with the nature of the machine, safety measures and protective measures to prevent accidental damage are required. The instructions laid down by the regulatory bodies should be followed accordingly. These general guidelines provide a framework for creating your own rules. Therefore, despite the determination of all these rules, the security measures to be applied by the user are essential. It should be ensured that the individuals who will use the machine understand these rules, understand the reasons for the establishment of these rules and realize why it would be in their favor to comply with them.
But of course, all responsibility does not fall on the user as machine manufacturers also have rules and steps to follow during their production process.
Heavy Machinery Producers and Safety in Heavy Machinery
Manufacturers and suppliers, which are perhaps the most important pillars of the industry, have specific responsibilities regarding heavy machinery safety. The reason for this is that these institutions and individuals have high experience and R&D opportunities in heavy machinery safety and should be able to solve the problems that may arise from their usage. The manufacturer's obligations are listed in the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, which stipulates that the machine manufacturer should eliminate the hazards by applying safety precautions or reduce the risks accompanying these hazards:
● Safe design. Every heavy machinery manufacturer must ensure that the machinery and equipment they manufacture are put on the market in the safest possible way. Companies invest significant amounts to meet this requirement in projects and products.
● Implementation of preservatives and supplementary protection measures. Heavy machinery manufacturers and suppliers must ensure that the measures taken are implemented at the highest level. Due to the nature of these machines and the nature of the work, necessary complementary measures should be determined and, if necessary, procured in order to prevent the risks that arise despite the precautions taken in production.
● Inform the user about the residual risk. Withstanding everything that was described above, anything involving heavy machinery carries security risks. Heavy machinery manufacturers and suppliers, as mentioned at the very beginning, should inform the users of these machines about the whole process.
As you can see, safety in heavy machinery is not entirely dependent on users or purchasing companies – manufacturers and suppliers also have important duties. Although these duties are guaranteed by the relevant legislation and laws, it is unfortunately known that not every actor in the sector applies these rules to the letter.
